The popular Guide to the Salt Marshes and Tidal Creeks of the Southeastern United States is now available on the Consortium’s website. Discover this comprehensive identification publication which describes 102 species, such as terrestrial plants, algae, and molluscs (oysters, clams, whelks, and mussels); arthropods (crabs and shrimp); chordates (fishes, mammals, reptiles, and birds); and annelids (worms and leeches). Details include a color photo, scientific name, characteristics, geographic range, size, habitat, and a fun fact.
Also included is a helpful section on how to use the guide, resources for further information, and a glossary of terms. Other sections describe the salt marsh ecological setting, ecosystem services, history and culture, threats and protection, and what people can do to protect these ecosystems. A PDF of the guide on which the website is based also is available to download.
This guide was developed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Content collaborators are the Consortium, SCDNR’s Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center, Clemson Extension’s Carolina Clear program, and the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve.
