New Report Documents Shellfish Mariculture Return-on-Investment

Apr 6, 2022

The Consortium partnered with the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business to publish a new 32-page report, The Economic Impact of Buying Local: Documenting the Potential Benefits of Increased Shellfish Mariculture Production in South Carolina.

The report delves into four hypothetical mariculture research and development infrastructure investment scenarios, which could lessen the reliance on oyster seed produced out-of-state, enhance South Carolina’s competitiveness for research grant funding, and, over time, lead to economic gains for the state of South Carolina. A cost-benefit analysis of the four scenarios is discussed, including how each could positively impact economic output and tax revenue to the state.
