Marine Education Program Assistant

Position Start Date: Immediate

Position Type:  Part-time (20 + hours per week for 16 months with potential for extension)
Hourly rate: $15/hour

About the Position

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium (Consortium) is seeking a Program Assistant to aid the agency’s Marine Educator with preparing, delivering, and evaluating virtual and/or in-person marine science-related classroom and field trip programs, teacher professional development (PD), and community-science efforts throughout South Carolina.

The focus of this position is to evaluate the effectiveness of the 2020-2021 virtual education programs created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic with regard to content, delivery methods, and overall support. Additionally, a needs assessment will need to be created and disseminated to identify areas for program development and delivery during the 2021-2022 school year. The research conducted by the Program Assistant could be included in a Master’s or Honor’s thesis.

Consortium Marine Education Program

The Consortium’s Marine Education Program provides opportunities for K – 12 students and teachers, nonformal educators, and communities to learn about coastal and ocean systems, issues, and stewardship.

Program topics reflect the current research priorities of the Consortium and include, but are not exclusive to, coastal ecosystems, marine debris, watersheds/water quality, and climate change. K – 12 programs are interdisciplinary, aligned with S.C. State Science Standards, incorporate science-technology-engineering-math (STEM) skills, and underscore a stewardship ethic. PD for formal and nonformal educators include one-day and multi-day trainings on a variety of projects and science topics. Community engagement includes stewardship opportunities to assist with ecosystem restoration and enhancement.

Candidate Qualifications

Position requires a bachelor’s degree or senior status in an educational program or equivalent and relevant program experience. Preferred requirements are a Bachelor degree or higher in one of these related fields: Elementary or Secondary Education, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Marine Science, or any geosciences field. A minimum of 2 years environmental education experience is preferred. Candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills, exceptional time management and organization skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and possess a valid driver’s license.
