Marine Debris Challenge Educator Workshop

About the Workshop

Join S.C. Sea Grant Consortium (Consortium) educators for a marine debris educator workshop in which we will be exploring “The Plastic Breakdown: A Marine Debris Challenge.”

October 9, 2026, from 1 to 4 pm at the Clemson Extension TEACH Center (2070 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Unit C412, Charleston, S.C. 29407).

This workshop is offered free-of-charge to any formal or nonformal K–12 educator and will include a demonstration and pilot session of the “Plastic Breakdown: A Marine Debris Challenge.” Lunch will be provided and participants are eligible for four renewal credits.

About the “Plastic Breakdown: A Marine Debris Challenge”

This emerging classroom resource is a game-style activity designed to teach students about the pathways and impacts of marine debris across a watershed.

The “Plastic Breakdown” will immerse students in the story of a plastic debris item that has ended up in the environment and has begun to move and breakdown, leaving traces as it makes its way towards the ocean. While there are no winners in marine debris, students will end the challenge more equipped to use creative solutions and the 7-R’s to rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, and rot their way to a more sustainable future.

The “Plastic Breakdown” is still being developed, so the Consortium is seeking feedback from workshop attendees on the design, implementation, and accessibility of this resource.
