Education Graduate Assistantship

About the Position

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium (Consortium) is seeking an Education Graduate Assistant (EGA) to support the Education and Outreach Department in implementing coastal science educational programming across South Carolina. The EGA will work directly with the Consortium’s Education and Outreach Manager and Marine Education Program Specialist on tasks related to education activities including educator professional development workshops, advisory and planning meetings, K-12 student programs, and public outreach and communication. There is the potential to develop a thesis or internship project while in this role, depending on the student’s interest and alignment with the Consortium’s strategic plan.

The Consortium is based in Charleston, S.C. and is a state agency that is part of a larger network of 34 university-based programs under the National Sea Grant College Program. The Consortium generates and provides science-based information on issues and opportunities to improve the social and economic well-being of our coastal citizens while ensuring the optimal use and conservation of our marine and coastal natural resources.

Job Duties

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of educator professional development workshops and programs.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of marine debris student education materials and community clean-up and outreach events.
  • Provide support for the From Seeds to Shoreline® salt marsh restoration program by assisting with school field days, marsh grass cultivation, and general program support.
  • Oversee the Education Loaner Kit Program by managing reservations, communications, and kit maintenance.
  • Represent the Consortium during school and community outreach events such as career days, science nights, and tabling events.
  • As needed, implement coastal science programming for K-12 audiences.

Qualifications

The position requires current enrollment or acceptance into a graduate degree program at an accredited university or college in South Carolina.

The selected individual will have experience and/or interest in science education and communication, general South Carolina coastal ecosystem knowledge, and be comfortable with working outside in conditions that may be cold, hot, humid, muddy, and buggy.

The EGA will possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills, time management and organizational capability, and a willingness to assist with project needs as they arise.

Position Type

Part-Time, $20/hour temporary appointment position through June 2026 with the possibility of extension to June 2027. The finalist for this position must successfully complete an E-verify and driver’s license background check.

Work Location and Hours

This position is based in Charleston, South Carolina.

20-25 hours/week during normal Consortium business hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm; however, work beyond regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, will be occasionally necessary to complete the requirements of the position. Travel to different programming sites within S.C. will be required. Valid driver’s license required.
