Environmental Educators Nearing Certification

Feb 18, 2022

The 2020-2022 Palmetto Environmental Education Certification (PEEC) cohort braved the elements in January 2022 for the third of four required training workshops of the two-year course. The group of formal and nonformal educators from across the state met in the midlands region where they explored longleaf pine ecosystems at Harbison State Forest, honed their outdoor survival skills at Saluda Shoals Park, and investigated cypress ecosystems at Congaree National Park.

As the state’s first and only environmental education certification for educators, PEEC engages participants in a series of in-person training workshops, online modules and group discussions, individualized outdoor explorations, and culminates in capstone projects designed to fine-tune skills for effective environmental education.

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium launched the program in 2018 and it is endorsed by the S.C. Department of Education for 120 renewal credits. This latest cohort of 16 educators is scheduled to graduate with their certification in August 2022.
