Consortium Awarded NOAA Grant to Remove Marine Debris

Feb 17, 2015

The NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service provided $143,344 in funding for the proposal “Using Community-Based Initiatives for Marine Debris Removal and Restoration of Essential Fish Habitats in the Charleston Harbor Watershed.” The grant will allow for the removal of 13 derelict vessels from the watershed, and engage community organizations and volunteers to identify and remove large-scale marine debris in Charleston County through three Clean Marine events.

These cleanups are scheduled for spring 2015, fall 2015, and spring 2016. The Consortium is partnering with S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management to assist with both the vessel removal and litter cleanups.
