About the Position

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium (Consortium), in partnership with the Carolinas Integrated Sciences and Assessments (CISA) based at the University of South Carolina, is seeking an experienced professional in resiliency planning, government planning, and/or climate science and risk communication for the position of Coastal Climate and Resilience Coordinator. The CCR Coordinator will provide technical expertise and a wide range of services to our communities adapting to the impacts of climate change.

The South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, a state agency established to manage the Sea Grant College program for South Carolina and based in Charleston, S.C., optimizes the environmental, social, and economic potential of the coastal and marine resources of the state and region through the support and dissemination of high-quality research, extension, and education programming. CISA is a NOAA-supported Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) research teams, supports the building of adaptive capacity in North Carolina and South Carolina through natural and social science research and outreach facilitating the integration of climate information into water, health, and coastal management and decision making.

Under the direction of the Extension Assistant Director, the Coastal Climate and Resilience (CCR) Coordinator will address and provide hands-on operational, and technical support to coastal communities, resource managers, and interest groups in South Carolina and the region. The CCR Coordinator will contribute to research driven by community needs and provide hands-on operational and technical support for coastal climate issues addressed by and the Consortium and CISA. The CCR Coordinator works with the Consortium’s Resilience and Coastal Processes Specialists (and other staff and researchers) to apply information and contextualization for products developed for communities.

Position Objectives

  • Enhance capacity of the Consortium’s and CISA’s science and extension programming to inform public and awareness of and access to climate resilience data products, information, and decision support tools.
  • Assist coastal communities in adaptation planning for climate and weather hazards.
  • Build awareness of and support coastal decision makers as they seek to evaluate and prepare for the impacts of climate and weather variability and coastal change.
  • Collaborate with researchers to provide decision-relevant information on the implications of climate variability.
  • Evaluate and review improvements in Consortium and CISA climate and resilience education and outreach.

Specific Duties

  • Analyze and provide up-to-date information and appropriate contextualization about climate science, climate impacts, and resilience strategies.
  • Identify information and service needs of and work with them in co-producing solutions to climate- and resilience-related issues.
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate coastal climate extension programs, vulnerability assessments, public seminars, and workshops for constituents.
  • Deliver presentations on Consortium and CISA climate and resilience activities at various state, regional, and national conferences and workshops.
  • Design and conduct interdisciplinary applied coastal climate and resilience research and extension projects.
  • Participate in the development and management of grant proposals to secure funding for client-driven climate services and resilience research and extension projects.
  • Prepare performance-based program objectives, benchmarks, metrics, program evaluations, and other programmatic reports as required by the Consortium and CISA.
  • Serve as a point of contact in assisting the South Carolina Office of Resilience.
  • Direct the work of student assistants and interns as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

This Position will be filled at either the Program Manager OR Program Coordinator level. The following qualifications are required to be considered at the Program Coordinator level.

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, climate science, public policy, risk communication, biology, ecology, geography, engineering, social sciences, or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and communicate, collaborate, and work effectively with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to interpret scientific research for non-technical audiences
  • Capacity to design and implement effective engagement strategies for a variety of audiences
  • Capacity to effect change in local communities and organizations through climate and resilience planning and adaptation engagement exercises
  • High level of analytical, organizational, and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including public speaking
  • Fluency in computer and communications technology

Also required is a commitment to a Professional Development agreement with the Consortium. The qualified candidate will gain the experience and will have their graduate (masters) education tuition sponsored by the Consortium. The terms of receiving graduate education sponsored by the Consortium, includes completion of their graduate education in an approved major within 3 years and continued employment with the Consortium for at least 2 years after completion of degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in grant writing and management
  • Experience with local government systems and participatory democracy
  • Proven record of success in securing extramural funding
  • Experience in the evaluation and use of coastal adaptation tools and floodplain management guiding adaptation implementation

Position Type

Regular, full-time position.  This position is funded jointly through the Consortium and CISA. Agency hiring range: $41,777 – $50.657. SC State class code AH40 Band 6. The finalist for this position must successfully complete an e-verify and driver’s license background check.

Work Location and Hours

This position is based in Charleston, S.C. Normal Consortium business hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. However, work beyond regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary in order to complete the requirements of the position. Travel throughout the state and region is necessary. A valid driver’s license is required.
