Clean Marina Program Graduate Assistantship

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium is seeking a part-time Clean Marina Graduate Student Assistant for the  Extension Program to be based at its office in Charleston, South Carolina. The Clean Marina Intern will work directly with the Coastal Communities Specialist and Extension Program Specialists on tasks and deliverables set by the Clean Marina Program (CMP) steering committee.

The intern will have opportunities to work in the field, and in the office; will be able to travel to and visit marinas across the state; and will network with public entities and private industry – working together to encourage sustainable practices along South Carolina waterways.

This is a paid internship position. There is an opportunity to develop a thesis or internship project as part of the work, depending on the student’s interest.

The Consortium is a university-based state agency established in 1980 to generate and provide science-based information on issues and opportunities to improve the social and economic well-being of coastal residents while ensuring the optimal use and conservation of marine and coastal natural resources.

About the Clean Marina Program

The South Carolina Clean Marina Program (CMP) is part of a national effort to protect and improve water quality by reducing nonpoint source water pollution. Originally established in coastal states with support from the Coastal Zone Management Program and Sea Grant, the CMP includes more than 30 states and territories that participate in this voluntary compliance program focused on environmentally responsible marina and boating practices.

Marinas and boatyards that meet the program’s environmental standards are recognized for their commitment to stewardship and are eligible to display the Clean Marina flag and use the logo in their marketing. Participating marinas also play an active role in encouraging their customers and other boaters to help protect our waterways.

Qualifications

This position requires current enrollment or acceptance into a graduate degree program at an accredited university or college in South Carolina. The chosen graduate intern will have a well-rounded marine or environmental studies background, experience or a keen interest in extension and outreach programs, strong interpersonal and written communication skills, an ability to coordinate groups and teams of people as well as work independently, and superior organizational capability.

Position requires a valid driver’s license.

Job Duties

• Coordinate technical advisory committee activities and program communications
• Assist with coordinating, scheduling, and conducting site visit inspections, including being on-site for inspections
• Assist in the development of site inspection summary reports
• Engage with marina staff through on-site visits to promote the program and strengthen stakeholder relationships
• Visit multiple marinas along the South Carolina coast to recruit new marinas, develop marketing materials, highlight features, newsletter content, testimonials, and social media content
• Organize and support certification/recertification workshops in collaboration with S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR)
• Partner with SCDNR to enhance program visibility through participation in regional boat shows and outreach events
• Maintain and update program resources, including training presentations and the CMP Guidebook
• Manage CMP Website content by updating links, informational resources, and marketing materials as needed

Position Type

Part-time paid internship, $20/hour

Work Location and Hours

20 hours/week (may include hours outside the regular business day) and routine paid travel to locations around the state. All non-travel work must be conducted at the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium office located in Charleston, SC. No remote work can be offered.
