2025 Emerging Contaminants Internship

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

About the Project

The Community Engaged Intern will support the NOAA-OAR-SG-funded project “Building a Regional Network to Study the Influence of Climate Change on Contaminants of Emerging Concern.” This project uses an interdisciplinary approach to research and communication around contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). The CEC knowledge gained throughout this project will be widely distributed and will help achieve goals and priorities extending beyond the Southeast to benefit the entire Sea Grant Network.

Internship Eligibility

Students must be undergraduates attending a 2- or 4-year accredited university or college in South Carolina, or South Carolina residents attending university out-of-state.

This program is open to students that come from all communities that represent our state. We especially want to cultivate opportunities for students that may not have historically had access to coastal science and education professional development opportunities.

Background and Commitments

The intern will support the following project objectives:

  1. Engage with end users through outreach methodologies to facilitate knowledge transfer
  2. Engage with the funded researcher teams by creating and conducting “ask the researcher” interviews and creating communication articles

  4. Assist the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services with sampling and administrative tasks as part of the Private Well Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Assessment Project
  5. Contribute to the development of a student-driven ArcGIS StoryMap to relay key findings from the project components

The internship is part-time (20 hours per week) and includes professional development opportunities. The intern is expected to participate in project team meetings and regular check-in meetings. The intern will work in the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium office (Charleston) but will have some required travel to Columbia, South Carolina. In addition, this intern will need to attend the in-person field experience from July 20th to 24th in North Carolina. This is a mandatory, all-expenses-paid field experience.

Time and Compensation

Approximately 20 hours per week for up to 12 weeks, May 19, 2025 – August 8, 2025.
