Agencies and Organizations (GA NC, SC)

Georgia

Georgia Sea Grant College Program, Georgia Sea Grant, part of the National Sea Grant College Program, integrates research, education, and outreach projects that identify the components critical to the economic, cultural, and environmental health of Georgia’s coast.

NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary. This sanctuary encompasses Gray's Reef, one of the largest near shore live-bottom reefs of the southeastern United States.

Cumberland Island National Seashore. The National Park Service manages Cumberland Island, which at just over 17 miles long is comprised of 16,850 acres of marsh, mud flats, and tidal creeks.

Georgia DNR Coastal Resources Division Education and Outreach. Follow this link to access information on georgia’s beaches, coastal laws, a guide to the biota of Georgia’s coast, and much more.

UGA Marine Institute, Sapelo Island. The Marine Institute serves as a hub for nearshore ecological and geological research was founded in 1953 as a research institute, and has been a center of nearshore ecological and geological research.

Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a marine science research center within the University System of Georgia system.

Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve. Click here to learn more about SINERR which is one of 26 estuarine research reserves in the United States. This network of protected areas has been established to conduct long-term research, education and stewardship efforts.

Gear Up, Savannah State University. The GEAR UP Program assists economically disadvantaged middle school students in pursuing higher education.

The University of Georgia Marine Extension Service. The Marine Extension Service works to increase the efficiency of existing marine industries, to identify new industries that do not harm the environment, and to increase public awareness and understanding of coastal ecosystems.

Coastal Georgia. Find information about the cities in the Coastal Georgia area along with links to events, and information on local government, education, and non-profits.

North Carolina

North Carolina Sea Grant College Program, North Carolina Sea Grant, part of the National Sea Grant College Program, integrates research, education, and outreach projects that identify the components critical to the economic, cultural and environmental health of North Carolina’s coast.

NC Coastal Federation Learn more about the organization whose mission is “Citizens working together for a healthy coast.” This non-profit group seeks to provide citizens and groups with assistance needed to take an active role in the wise management of North Carolina’s coastal waters and natural resources.

NOAA/NURC at UNC-W, NOAA’s Undersea Research Center at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, is part of the NURP National program. It seeks to provide undersea technology to scientists, address regional and national science needs, enhance public awareness, and to establish partnerships to enhance the relevance of the center’s research. Visit this site to check out underwater cameras showing real-time research occurring on the North Carolina coast.

Science, Mathematics, and Technical Education Center. This organization’s mission is to systematically improve performance in science, mathematics, and technology following the “No Child Left Behind” criteria, helping to link scientists and teachers together.

University of North Carolina/Coastal Studies Institute seeks to conduct research, offer educational opportunities and provide outreach in coastal and marine sciences and management. This organization is located the North Carolina Outer Banks.

Cape Hatteras Nation Sea Shore: Stretching across over 70 miles of barrier islands, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a combination of natural and cultural resources, and provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Cape Lookout National Sea Shore: This national Seashore is located in the southern Outer Banks and includes three undeveloped barrier islands that serve as a valuable natural and historical resource.

North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources: The environmental education page of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources provides EE program information, curriculum, a kid’s page and more!

North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve: This website provides up to date news about NC estuaries, information for teachers and students, an estuary cam, and research currently taking place within the reserves.

Marine Quest – Center for Marine Science: This program sponsored by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington provides ‘hands-on, feet-wet, high-tech’ Ocean Education and Marine Environmental Education.

UNCW Center for Marine Science: This Center strives to promote basic and applied research in the fields of oceanography, coastal and wetland studies, marine biomedical and environmental physiology, and marine biotechnology and aquaculture.

NC Museum of Natural Sciences: Visit this site to learn cool facts about the latest exhibit, as well as information about education, research, and fun stuff at the museum!

Science Junction (NCSU): This is a cyber-community for teachers, students and researchers of science created in an effort to integrate sciences into our daily lives.

NC Math and Science Education Networks (Note From our Board of Advisors – Karen Dawkins is director the ECU, Greenville program.)

NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT): NCCAT is dedicated to the advancement of teaching as an art and a profession. Visit this site to see the latest seminars offered, and the most current information for teachers concerning NC state initiatives.

Avery Research Center / College of Charleston This center was established to collect, preserve, and make public the unique historical and cultural heritage of African Americans in the Lowcountry and South Carolina.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission Here you'll find links to Cawcaw, to record local bird sightings, and leave no trace outdoor ethic guidelines. Also find schedules of events and festivals occurring throughout the year.

NEERS ACE Basin, part of the National Estuarine research reserve system, the ACE Basin is one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the east coast. Click here to learn more about the history of the reserve as well as educational opportunities and current research being conducted within the ACE basin.

Project Oceanica conducted by the College of Charleston, SC, seeks to integrate education with oceanographic research and exploration, and to develop educational resources and programs available to college and high school students, as well as K-12 educators. South Carolina Aquarium. This website is a great resource for information about school visits to the aquarium, educational resources for educators, online curriculum related to aquarium exhibits, and a fun activity page for children!

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Follow this link to learn about South Carolina’s DNR Education programs, native plant life and animals, the REEL Kids Aquatic Education Program and more!

Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences: Learn about the University of South Carolina’s Baruch Research institute that offers short courses, workshops, outreach programs, and much more! The Estuary Net Project incorporates water testing and science learning in watersheds at high schools across the coast.

SC GEAR UP: This program uses activities as well as collaborations with partnerships around SC to provide both focused interventions in academics and personal development and mentoring/tutoring with the goal of preparing students for going to and succeeding in college.

Federal Agencies

National Science Foundation The NSF is an independent federal agency that serves as the funding source for approximately 20% of the nation’s public research colleges and universities. Visit this sight to learn about the latest discoveries, research and information available in all scientific disciplines, as well as funding for the education community.

Office of Ocean Exploration A division of NOAA, this website serves as an internet source of information, photos, videos, research and history for all those interested in exploring the ocean realm. This is a visually alluring website not only covers current research ongoing in the field of marine sciences, it also offers comprehensive lessons plans and curriculum.

NOAA Coastal Services Center This site serves to link people, information and technology in the discipline of coastal resource management. It includes historical hurricane tracking and an online library collection including research journals and rare books on fish, water birds, zoology and more!

SEACOOS This site serves to provide information on observations of the regional ocean conditions in the Southeastern United States. Visit this site for interactive data retrieval of current ocean conditions and data mapping systems. This site also includes a community and classroom link with children’s games, lesson plan ideas and teacher resources.

NOAA The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Homepage that includes current news, weather and Science, Service and Stewardship links!

National Marine Sanctuaries: At this site you’ll find information about Marine Sanctuaries in the united States including their history, current management and their scientific and educational programs.

National Estuarine Research Reserves Visit this site to learn more about the network of estuarine systems preserved for long-term stewardship, education and research.

Office of Education and Sustainable Development coordinates education activities across NOAA and oversees the implementation of the NOAA Strategic Plan for education.

National Office of Sea Grant, a division of NOAA, is “science serving America’s coasts. This link allows you to access information about Sea Grant offices and projects all over the country.

NOAA Ocean Explorer: Explorations Follow this link to read the logs of current research trips occurring around the globe, including pictures and video of some research expeditions.

NASA Visit the NASA homepage which includes links to kid’s, student and educator resources.

EPA The site for the United States Environmental Protection Agency includes a link for educational resources as well as a special page just for kids! Check it out!

US Department of the Interior This site includes links to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, USGS, and the National Park Service. You can also find listings of the current Department of Interior initiatives.

US Fish and Wildlife This site includes great links to information about endangered species, habitat conservation, wetlands, contaminants, and science information.

Science Education Programs

The Science House, N.C. State University - The Science House is a learning outreach project whose mission is to work in partnership with K12 teachers to increase the use and impact of hands-on learning technologies in mathematics and science.

Center for Science Education, University of S.C. - The center is assists individual teachers, schools, school districts, and consortia of districts through the development of materials that provide effective K-12 science teaching, in-service workshops and curriculum development.

The Marine Education Center and Aquarium (MECA), University of Georgia. MECA is the education branch of the Marine Extension Service. It provides resources for students, teachers, and the general public in matters related to Georgia's coastal marine environments.

Roper Mountain Science Center, This science center is located in the mountains of S.C. and is operated by Greenville County Public Schools and provides programs for the public, as well as the school district.

Ruth Patrick Center for Science Education, The RPCSE serves the University of South Carolina at Aiken, local industry, and public school districts in the Central Savannah River Area in establishing a permanent program for enhancing mathematics and science education in the elementary, middle, and high schools in the area.

Center for Science Education at the University of South Carolina, This center is housed at USC and prepares future and current teachers in science and mathematics disciplines at the graduate level.

University of South Carolina Education Center for Coastal Ecology, USC- Beaufort manages this center as it provides educational services to various interest groups such as K - 16 teachers and students, state natural resource agencies, and a variety of other interest groups.

UGA Marine Science Center and Aquarium, Follow this link to find information on the education branch of the UGA’s Marine Extension Service. This is a great resource for students, teachers, and the general public in matters related to Georgia's coastal marine environments.

Fernbank Science Center, Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Fernbank, works directly with DeKalb School District in providing hands-on science programs for teachers and students. Many of its programs are also available to the general public.

Tybee Island Marine Science Center, Located on beautiful Tybee Island, Georgia, this center provides marine science education programs for school and public groups.

Oatland Island Education Center, This environmental education center is managed by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System in Georgia. It is also open to the public and other school systems throughout the region.

Sound To Sea Environmental Education Program, Restricted to students and teachers, this program is the only residential environmental education program located on the Outer Banks. It provides school groups a habitat-based program that includes interdisciplinary hands-on activities, a Challenge Course and special evening programs.

Project Oceanica, College of Charleston. This website offers information and resources on current marine oceanographic research. It is suitable for upper middle, high, and undergraduate audiences.

Office of Ocean Exploration, NOAA’s . To follow the field experiences of modern day ocean explorers, click here.

Shipboard Experiences – "Windows to the Deep" SouthEast COSEE Education Specialist, Margaret Olsen, presents her PowerPoint program on exploring the slope and Blake Plateau off the South Atlantic Bight.

Part I: The Science (PowerPoint 22mb) includes the purpose, scenes of "the science" and the summary of findings. It has 29 slides.

Part II: The Alvin Launch and Recovery (PowerPoint 40mb) has 44 slides.
