SE and GEAR UP Coastal Legacy Program for Middle School Teachers
Information and Application The Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence-SouthEast (COSEE-SE) partners with the South Carolina Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (SC GEAR UP) to offer the 2006 Coastal Legacy Program for NC, SC, and GA middle level teachers at the Penn Center on St. Helena Island, SC on June 17-23, 2006. The Coastal Legacy program highlights the rich cultural history of the Southeast’s coast, barrier islands and sea Islands. In this week-long investigation, teachers will explore teaching strategies of “culturalized science” which applies coastal culture, history, and heritage to earth, environmental, and physical science and mathematical concepts. Participants will investigate barrier island ecosystems, impact of hurricanes, geography, and physical factors, such as tides in the southeast region. Exciting educational resources and lessons, access to scientists and community leaders, and field based experiences are key components in this week-long workshop. During this time, participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of resources available from GEAR UP, COSEE-SE, the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium, Caw Caw Interpretive Center – Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, Gullah-Geechee Sea Island Coalition. Successful completion of the entire Coastal Legacy programs consists of the following criteria:
COASTAL LEGACY PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Increased awareness and appreciation of contributions of the Gullah/Geechee coastal culture extending from Wilmington, NC to Jacksonville, Fl.
This intensive week-long program consists of interactions with research scientists on coastal science, demonstrations of hands-on “culturalized science” activities, and field investigations. All activities are based on the National Science Education Standards and Ocean Literacy Essential Principles The major topics to be addressed include:
The science of Coastal Legacy integrate aspects from Social Studies, including Gullah/Geechee folklore, West African history of enslavement, the rice industry, the Indigo dye industry, and crafts used in the rice industry, such as sweetgrass basket making.
