03-04 SouthEast Portals to Ocean Research for Teachers (SEPORT)

Georgia

Museum of Aviation Warner Robbins, GA
Mikie Emerson, Flat Rock Middle School; and Leigh Scott, Georgia Military College
Participants received information on resources available at the Museum of Aviation and were visited by a former “educator at sea” to discuss ocean exploration in the classroom. Participants also received information on the NOAA Ocean Exploration program and participated in activities from Ocean Exploration. Finally, participants tried a few activities from the Maurey Project
Sharon Jaspan, Cedar Grove Middle School;
Jerri Reining, Sequoyah Middle School

Participants heard a series of guest speakers and were presented classroom activities on various subjects. Topics covered included remote sensing, NOAA’s Ocean Exploration, the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, and a former “educator at sea”.

Katrinka Major, Fairplay Middle School; Donald Glenn, Lindley Middle School; and Priscilla George, City Park School
Sessions included: Web exploration in the Computer Lab, “Sharing Experiences in Atlantic and Blake Ridge Ocean Investigation”, “Satellite Imaging and Using Data in the Classroom to Build Ocean Awareness”, and “Human Impact on Fresh Water and Ocean Environments in Georgia”.
Marine Education Center and Aquarium
UGA
Brenda Lewis, A.E. Beach High School; and
Ann Goff, Ware County High
Participants trawled aboard the vessel Sea Dawg, studied phytoplankton through participation in classroom activities, and learned about ocean science research at Savannah State University through a guest lecturer.

North Carolina

NC Math/Science Education Network, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC
Lyndah Tello, Edwards Middle School;
Brenda Owens, Kinston High School
Participants learned about technology used to study oceanography and strategies for incorporation of these technologies into the classroom curriculum. Exciting web sites on ocean exploration were presented. The teachers also participated in several classroom activities related to ocean exploration.
Judith Gibson, Cape Fear Academy; Sue Patel, Marion High School

The overall theme of this Ocean Awareness Day was Ocean Connections. Biodiversity and ocean currents were the marine science concepts used to help illustrate amazing classroom resources. The current research of the Oculina deep-sea reefs and Hardbottom habitats off the Southern Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Stream introduced the participants to the wealth of information and opportunities available. Presentations, computer/web access and activities generated much interest and enthusiasm for the teachers and ultimately their students.

Discovery Place
Charlotte, NC
Brad Fout, York Comprehensive High School;
Mindy Martin, Coke Middle School;
Robyn Staup, Myers Park High School
This ocean awareness day focused on the resources available to teachers at Discover Place and culminated with a viewing of the IMAX Coral Reef Adventures film. Additional ocean sciences resources, such as the Ocean Science Bowl competition and various education CD-ROMs were presented.
Natural Science Center
Greensboro, NC
Flo Gullickson, Southwest Guilford High School; Leslie Haines, Walter Williams High School Participants will be introduced to Ocean Explorer web site and will perform one Ocean Explorer activity from each of the major areas of study in Earth Science: Geology, Weather, Oceanography. Natural Science Center staff will use the Planetarium to talk about ancient methods of navigation. All activities will be tied into the Center’s upcoming “SeaFest” Day (February 21).
NC Museum of Natural Sciences
Raleigh, NC
Carl Rush , Green Hope High School; Jan Healy, Green Hope High School;
Kirsten Oshinsky, Wakefield High School
This workshop was designed to introduce high school science teachers in Wake County’s public schools to instructional opportunities involving “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit “ which will be running through January 4, 2004 at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Experts from the museum, SE COSEE team members and two guest speakers, discussed ocean science research as well as eight standards-based lesson plans (spanning biology, chemistry, physics and earth science).

South Carolina

Virginia Roberson, Forest Circle Middle
Participants journeyed into the estuary aboard the vessel Discovery and were introduced to the physical and biological parameters of estuaries and explored the marsh on Otter Island. A second SEPORT was offered as a “Sneak Peek Day” for the new Edisto Island Nature Center.
This SE PORT also offered a workshop on the African roots of southern foods.

SC State Museum
Columbia, SC

Lemuel A. Patterson III, Gibbes Middle School; Loretta J. Leaphart, Fairfield Middle School; Donald Sweeper, St. Martin de Porres Catholic School

Ocean science teaching, learning, and scientific discovery was presented at the SC State Museum.

Rebecca-Adele E. Brunson, West Ashley High School; Dawn Coker, North Charleston High School
This SE PORT Day took place at Ft. Johnson in Charleston, SC and focused on the Phytoplankton Monitoring Network and other marine science research taking place at Ft. Johnson.
