could be me"
Description:
"Multicultural Pathways to Ocean
Science Education," is a charrette, designed to bring experience,
passion and expertise together for a common purpose. The major goal is
to assist SouthEast COSEE meet its objective to increase access of ocean
sciences and ocean sciences education to underrepresented groups.
The format is to invite participants (20-30)
who fit into a number of roles:
a. academic experience with past programs/projects
for underrepresented groups in science in precollege programs;
b. academic experience with programs/projects for the undergraduate/graduate
minority population;
c. precollege teaching experience in multicultural classrooms; and
d. personal experience of what worked for you.
With the aid of a facilitator, this group
will to pull common threads of workable strategies --successful projects,
students and programs. Then, we will brainstorm to develop innovative
or "tried and true" projects/programs to recommend for SouthEast
COSEE and Florida COSEE to initiate, partner or promote.
Also we want to highlight and recognize
existing, state, regional, and national programs as models across the
three-state region--NC, SC, and GA, plus FL.
This effort is not a workshop in the traditional
sense. It is the base preparation for future workshops and programs. The
objective is to identify at least 2-3 real ideas/projects for SouthEast
COSEE to promote in 2003-2005.

- Workable ideas for projects with 2003-2005, SouthEast
COSEE to promote with partners
- Publication from the discussion of Commonalities
and Best of the Best initiatives in the past, process, ideas with rationale
and the prioritization process. These would be published and placed
on the SouthEast COSEE web site. It would provide authorship for participating
faculty.
- Ideas:
Ernest Just Scholarship for SouthEast COSEE Partner Institutions
Multicultural Ocean Science Poster for the South Atlantic Bight

their interest?
- What opportunities are they considering for a career?
- What support or mentoring already exists? What kind
of support/mentoring did the successful graduates receive?
