Education
Education and Research Interests During my career at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, and now with North Carolina Sea Grant, I envision myself an interpreter – making marine and aquatic information accessible to all. Currently, I am working on a needs assessment of elementary classroom teachers (in public, private, and charter schools) to discover the state of ocean education across North Carolina. Finding out what elementary teachers know and teach about the ocean, what they want to learn more about, and how they want this information delivered to them will be useful and of interest to all free-choice learning facilities. Designing and conducting professional development workshops and materials for formal and non-formal educators are critical for the development of highly qualified educators. COSEE SouthEast offers excellent learning opportunities for classroom teachers in NC, SC, and GA.Selected Publications Spence, L., B. Schaeffer, C. Thomas, T.K. Hathaway, M. Olsen.
