to Scientist's Niche
This site is for government funded scientists
and academic research scientists desiring to become more involved in
education. The Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence Southeast
(COSEE-SE) is dedicated to establishing meaningful and productive
collaborations between scientists and educators. This web site
will help you produce a worthwhile education project that complements
and enriches your research.
Funding agencies encourage,
and in some cases require, investigators to demonstrate how their proposed
research will have broader impacts. Agencies such as the National Science
Foundation may even provide specific examples of
broader impact activities but it is still up to you to figure out how
to adapt those activities to your research. COSEE-SE can connect you
with science education professionals who can help you design and implement
broader impact activities unique to your proposed research. The table
below is designed to give you a general guide to levels of involvement
and expected financial commitment. Links from each level will take
you to exemplary ongoing projects and programs.
SUPPORTING
SCIENTIST
- At least one (1-2 hour) meeting with a COSEE-SE
team member to discuss and plan your education/outreach contribution
- One to five hours of annual participation
by you or a designated graduate student in a COSEE facilitated
project
- One 1-2 hour interaction with a COSEE-SE
staff person to evaluate and debrief the experience
- Approximately 0 - 5% of your proposed budget

Not working on a proposal and just want
to get involved?
We have lots of ideas and can help you
find educators, students and informal learners with whom to connect.
For example you could:
- Give a public lecture or presentation at
a science center.
- Speak informally with the staff of an informal
science education center about your research, the tools
and techniques you use, and interesting findings you’ve made.
- Lend or donate scientific instruments, samples
or imagery to a science center.
- Participate in a career day at a middle or
high school.
- Make a presentation in a teacher professional
development workshop.
- Volunteer to be a judge or moderator during the
annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
- Write an article on your research for our newsletter Passport
to the Sea.
- Invite a teacher along on a cruise or other field
trip.
- Review appropriate sections of curricula,
websites, interpretive text, exam questions, or career
information for scientific accuracy. See, for example, the Digital Library for Earth System Education.
