SC Coastal Communitiy Initiative Grant Program

back to Coastal Communities

Horry and Colleton Counties
2004-2005 Grant Recipients

Presently the recipients of the 2004-2005 cycle of this grant award are the coastal communities of Colleton and Horry County. Colleton County is developing a trail plan, providing a low impact alternative transportation system connecting open spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, while simultaneously providing public access to the natural resources of the ACE (Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto rivers) Basin, one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast. The project will concentrate on a master trail plan including an off-road system of pathways and bikeways within the County that supplement the roadway network. This bike and pedestrian trail plan will ultimately lead to the development of a bike and pedestrian trail system that will in turn provide a valuable resource to Colleton County citizens and visitors.

In addition, Horry County has compiled a county-wide open space inventory that in conjunction with modeling efforts will be used to establish a decision-making framework that analyzes land-use alternatives and impacts associated with the county’s open space. Once this process is complete, Horry County planners will develop an open space plan to be incorporated in the Natural Resources Element of the Horry County Comprehensive Land-Use Plan, ultimately leading to the formulation of goals, objectives and strategies for open space preservation throughout the county. In addition, the open space inventory will be used to develop a list of significant properties that should be acquired, leased, preserved or otherwise protected. This list will in turn be used to make recommendations to the Horry County Council relating to the use of the Horry County Open Space Fund for property acquisition.
