ACE Basin Adventure Teacher Workshop
Colleton, South Carolina
June 11-14, 2008

COSEE-SE, in partnership with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve, North Inlet Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Sewee Association, invite you to explore the ACE (Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto) Basin. Interested teachers of all subjects of grades 6-12 in the counties of Berkeley, Dorchester, Georgetown, and Horry are encouraged to apply. Activities include Ashepoo River kayaking, night sounds forest tour, sea turtle nesting activity, an estuarine trawl aboard the catamaran E/V Discovery, water quality sampling, and exploration of nearby barrier and hammock islands. Lodging and meals are provided. All activities align with state standard curriculum guidelines and teachers are eligible for renewal credit. 2008 Ocean Sciences Education Leadership Institute “Undersea Research and Technology – Revealing the Deep”
Wilmington, North Carolina
June 22-28, 2008

COSEE-SE will be hosting its annual summer Institute on June 22-28, 2008 at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Center for Marine Science. The focus will be how technology enables scientist to investigate the seafloor. The Institute provides lodging, stipend, recertification credit, and support activities aligned with local science standards for physical, earth, and life sciences. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with research scientists and build an ROV Sea Perch for use in their classroom. 2008 Coastal Legacy Workshop “Downhill Connections: Tying Creeks to Estuaries”

June 23-28, 2008

Join COSEE-SE as they explore the importance of tidal creeks and estuaries and impacts of development to their health. Participants will engage in salt marsh and estuarine field studies, hands-on activities, and informative presentations by local marine science researchers. Formal and informal middle- and high-school educators from GA, SC, and NC are invited to apply. Lodging, stipend, and recertification credit will be provided. Building Sustainable Communities for the 21st Century

The Southeast Watershed Forum is working with NOAA’s Coastal Services Center, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Gulf of Mexico Program, TVA, and other organizations on plans for the first Regional Quality Growth conference: Building Sustainable Communities for the 21st Century.

The conference will highlight resource protection programs and management strategies to ensure more sustainable communities in a time of unprecedented growth and development pressures, diminished water availability, and threats from climate change. Local case studies and presentations will focus on the following categories: 1) Building Greener Communities, 2) Saving Habitat, Farmland, Green Infrastructure, and Community Character, and 3) Designing Resilient Communities.

The program offers an opportunity to showcase regional leadership on issues that will dramatically affect the viability and natural resource base of southeastern communities. This conference is ideal for developers, land use planners, natural resource managers, elected officials, land trusts, watershed groups, universities, and local, state, and federal agencies to learn about wiser land use and development strategies for the region. Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music and Movement Festival

This festival seeks to celebrate and reconnect the African Diasporic links of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. The artists and presenters of the festival are natives of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and African countries. 2008 will be the culmination of a series of events hosted by the Gullah/Geechee Nation to commemorate the 200th year since the abolition of the British slave trade. 2008 South Carolina Water Resources Conference

The first Clemson University Restoration Institute-hosted statewide conference on water resources will be held at the Charleston Area Convention Center on October 14-15, 2008. The purpose of the conference is to provide an integrated forum for discussion of water policies, research projects, and water management in the state.

This ambitious undertaking seeks to include participants from all areas concerned with water issues: public policy decision makers, municipal water authorities, stormwater managers, environmental engineering and consulting firms, colleges and universities, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, economic development organizations, utility companies, land trusts, and land managers.

The event will focus on research and policies vital to the quality of life and economic prosperity of South Carolina, and seeks to build productive collaboration among key stakeholders and interested citizens from across the state.
