Project-Based Learning Opportunities
 
eBOB (elementary basic observation buoy)

Description: STEM-based project that challenges student teams to work within a budget to design and create working weather buoys equipped with a real-time data sensor (BOBino) that collects air and water temperature, light variations, and barometric pressure.

Grade Levels: K-12

Cost: Free

Details on Classes and Trainings: Sea Grant-led student sessions and teacher trainings are available. Classroom sessions can be tailored to range from two 50-minute class periods to a full week for a class size of 30. Teacher trainings are one-day.

Schedule of Dates: Contact E.V. Bell (ev.bell@scseagrant.org) to schedule classroom or teacher training. A teacher training will require a minimum of 10 teachers.


ROVs (remotely operated vehicles)

Description: STEM-based project that challenges student teams to design and create an ROV that can complete a mission (repairing an object, collecting underwater samples, or recovering an item). This is based on the Marine Advanced Technology Education ROV program.

Grade Levels: 3-12

Cost: Free

Details on Classes and Trainings: Sea Grant-led teacher trainings are available. Teacher trainings are one-day.

From Seeds to Shoreline®

Description: STEM-based environmental-stewardship project that engages students in restoring areas of critical salt marsh habitat through cultivating and transplanting of smooth cord grass (Spartina alterniflora). Throughout the process, students not only learn about the importance of the salt marsh but also engage in scientific investigations to examine variables that help or hamper S. alterniflora growth.

Grade Levels: K-12

Cost of Training: Free

Details on Trainings: A teacher training is scheduled for August 8 at the S.C. Department of Natural Resources Marine Resources Division. Attendance at this one-day training is required for participation in the 2018-2019 school year. Details on the program and registration.

BioDiscovery Project

Description: STEM-based citizen-science project that engages students in creating bioracks for investigating marine organisms and water quality. Data is collected and entered into a data portal that is shared among schools for analysis and comparison along and across watershed systems.

Grade Levels: K-12

Cost of Training: Free

Details on Trainings: A teacher training is scheduled for June 21. To join the waiting list, please contact ev.bell@scseagrant.org.

Schedule of Dates: June 21. A fall 2018 training will be hosted (date TBD).
